LedgerStart — full setup & security guide

By LedgerStart Team · · 10 min read

This guide takes you from unboxing to advanced operational security. It includes checklists, examples, and interactive tips you can use while you work through your hardware wallet setup.

Checklist before you begin

  • Verify device packaging — no tampering.
  • Have pen + metal backup or recovery card ready.
  • Work in a private, offline space for seed creation.

Step A — Setup & PIN

Turn on the device, follow on-device prompts, choose a strong PIN. Avoid sequential or repeating digits. Use a long PIN if supported.

Step B — Seed phrase & backups

Write the recovery phrase on a durable medium. Consider a metal backup for longevity. Test your backup on a spare device if possible.

Pro tip: Do not photograph or copy your recovery phrase into any digital service. Physical or metal storage dramatically reduces risk.

Connecting to wallets

Use official companion apps and recommended third-party wallets. Approve every transaction on-device. For contract interactions, use a test transaction first.

Advanced — Passphrase & hidden accounts

Optional passphrases create hidden wallets but increase recovery complexity. Only use after you understand the trade-offs.

Operational security (OpSec)

Use device segmentation: a device for long-term cold storage, another for active trading. Separate accounts for daily use vs. long-term holdings.
